Striped dolphin2/25/2023 ![]() At times they can be seen together with common dolphins and we have even observed the common dolphins imitated the striped dolphins’ typical way of travelling at speed and leaping out of the water in unison. Striped dolphins generally hunt at depths comprised between 5 and 100 meters with short 1- to 2-min apnea, while other common species such as the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus may prefer shallower waters but may extend breath-holding time to 15 min. In the United States, striped dolphins are not listed as threatened or endangered. Striped dolphins have a characteristic way of travelling very quickly, making long shallow leaps above the water and frequently changing direction. Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The IUCN lists the striped dolphin as lower risk/conservation dependent. It is a member of the oceanic dolphin family, Delphinidae. ![]() They are usually not as curious towards boats as other dolphin species in the Azores, but can occasionally bowride and seem to enjoy travelling at speed. The Striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) is an extensively studied dolphin found in temperate and tropical waters of all the worlds oceans. They are usually encountered further off the coastline then our resident bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins. In the Azores, striped dolphins are seen occasionally during the spring and summer months, usually from June to November/December. These dolphins travel in groups, typically numbering from a few dozen to 500 or more individuals. ![]() It shows a preference for highly productive, open waters beyond the continental shelf.
